Why you Should Spend a Day at the Nürburgring

A mandatory stop on our European road trip was the Nürburgring. So after our castle-hopping excursion to Wurzburg, we headed north to the “Green Hell”.

There is nothing but green surrounding the track.

What is the Nürburgring?

The Nürburgring is one of the most famous racetracks in the world. With 12.9 miles of track and 73 total turns, the Nordschleife course at the Nürburgring is one of the most difficult courses for drivers of any level. But that’s also exactly why it’s at the top of any car enthusiast’s wish list!  Located 2 hours northwest of Frankfurt and 2 hours south of Dusseldorf, the track is nestled in the middle of otherwise quiet, beautiful, green German countryside.

Who can drive on the track?

One of the other reasons why this track is so special to car lovers all over the world is that you don’t have to be a Formula 1 driver to experience those famous turns. Most days of the month anyone can turn up in their car or motorcycle, pay 25 euros, and drive round the track for what they call a “tourist ride”.

How does this work?

We checked the schedule to see when the track would be open for tourist rides, arrived at the track, bought our passes for entry and then got in line at the start of the Nordschleife course.

About to scan our card to get onto the track

While anyone can turn up for a tourist ride, there are some very strict rules and regulations in place to keep everyone safe. Firstly, you may only pass another car on the left and the car that you are about to pass must put on their right hand indicators to let you know that they see you and are aware that you are going to pass them.

I have to say that we felt extremely safe throughout both of our laps around the track. All of the drivers that day adhered to the rules and while it was a high-speed adventure, it was a safe one.

The laps!

Where to Stay

The best place to stay while visiting the Nürburgring is the Linder Congress & Motorsport Hotel, which is located literally right ON the track, in fact right on the start line of the Grand Prix Circuit!

With the perfect mix of luxury and convenience, the hotel certainly delivers the type of experience Nürburgring visitors expect. There is a garage located underneath the hotel, perfect for everyone bringing their own car to drive around the track.

Call the hotel ahead of time and tell them you will have a car, they will reserve a spot for you!

The suites are spacious with views for days.

And the food in the restaurant is excellent! What more could you ask for?

Driving around the Nürburgring was unlike any experience we’ve had before. It was exhilarating, exciting, and exhausting all at the same time. We highly recommend it for anyone taking European Delivery!
