Lake Garda is one of those places that once you visit you will wonder where it has been all your life. Seriously, you will be dying to go back. The views, the food, the people, Lake Garda offers everything you could want in a luxe summer holiday.
Where is it?
Where in the world is Lake Garda? Many Americans aren’t aware that Lake Garda even exists. It is located not too far from the better-known Lake Como, about halfway between Milan and Venice. Lake Garda is the perfect stop on a northern Italian road trip.
When to Go
Being in Northern Italy, Lake Garda is best in the late spring, early summer. But don’t be afraid to visit during the sunny shoulder season. We visited in early May of this year and we were lucky to enjoy that warm Mediterranean sun the entire time.
Where to Stay
Lake Garda does offer many different accommodation options. But for the luxury traveler looking for that authentic Italian experience, you have to choose the Grand Hotel Fasano. Family owned and operated, the hotel gives you a glimpse into the old world. With the charm and elegance that only comes from decades of hosting jet setters, Grand Hotel Fasano is a hidden gem.
Located on the west side of the lake, the views from your balcony are breathtaking. Just soaking in the sun each morning make the trip worthwhile. And once you get a bit puckish, head down for breakfast and countine to enjoy the wonderful views!
With a large, indoor/outdoor pool, sunbed area and luxury spa, there is plenty to keep you busy right onsite. We were able to indulge in a fabulous treatment at the Aveda Spa, the Beautifying Body Wrap, was an amazing way to relax and unwind after all our travels.
Where to Eat
If you are fortunate enough to stay at the Grand Hotel Fasano, you must dine at Il Fagiano one night. With a tasting menu that could compete with any Michelin starred restaurant, Chef Matteo Felter delivers an experience that you will talking about for weeks to come.
Trust me, 9 or 10 courses later, you will be quite impressed
However, if you are looking for something a bit more casual, La Darsena down the road is a hip beach club that serves up some amazingly fresh seafood with some tasty local wines to pair.
What to Do
Just strolling around Lake Garda is a treat all in and of itself. But the real fun comes when you hop in the car. For any driving enthusiasts out there, the route from the Grand Hotel Fasano up to Riva del Garda is an absolute MUST. The winding curves, the sharp bends and the scenery are just amazing. Just another reason why Lake Garda must be included on any Northern Italian road trips!
Oh and if you need to stop for lunch after a day taking in the sights, Riva Carne al Fuoco will offer you a view and some tasty food. You have to try the one of the local cuts of meat.
If you are the type of traveler that is looking to go somewhere that no one else has been (no other Americans at least), then put Lake Garda on your radar! It will not disappoint.
