As an East Coast skier, the idea of skiing with little to no wind and bright blue skies seemed too good to be true. But in St. Moritz, this is a fact of life. Let’s see why you need to ski St. Moritz this season!
1) Amazing Weather When You Ski St. Moritz
St Moritz sees 322 days of sunshine a year and is officially Switzerland’s sunniest spot! I can tell you from a lifetime of experience, that is quite an improvement right off the bat from the East Coast skiing that I am used to. Also, due to being a high alpine resort with a peak of over 10,000 feet, they receive an average of 138’’ of snow each year, so conditions are often just as amazing as the weather when you head to St. Moritz to ski.
2) Luxurious Setting to Ski
When you ski St. Moritz, there is a certain caché that comes to mind. Like a wintertime French Riviera, it has that old world charm. You’ll notice that right. For example, if you stay at the Suvretta House you will see what I mean immediately. The level of service is just fantastic. From the moment you wake up and head to breakfast, to the moment you put on your ski boots in the ski “locker room”, i.e full service private ski area complete with fireplace, to the minute you step back into the hotel after a day on the slopes, you feel catered to and relaxed.
3) Haute Cuisine
The level of cuisine available in St. Moritz is just as high as its peaks. In fact, each year there is a festival celebrating just that. We recently attended the 25th St. Moritz Gourmet Festival Finale at Suvretta House and got to sample dishes from 5 top rated chefs from around the world, including: Sang-Hoon Degeimbre, Nicolai Nørregaard, Thomas and Mathias Sühring, and Mingoo Kang. What better way to take in St. Moritz culture than at a black tie gala after a weekend of skiing? So not only do you get to ski St. Moritz, but you also get to indulge while in St. Moritz.
4) St. Moritz is Also Known For Curling
Don’t like to ski or want to do something other than skiing while you’re on your winter escape? Well don’t worry there are lots of other things to keep you busy, like curling! As the twice former home to the winter Olympics, St. Moritz is also known for outdoor curling. In fact, at Suvretta House, you can take private curling lessons from a pro in one of the most picturesque ice rinks I have ever seen!
5) Top Notch Ski Culture
Skiing in St. Moritz can be whatever you want it to be. If you are a pro there is challenging off-piste skiing where you can take a helicopter to the top of the mountain and try the most challenging lines that you dare. If you are an advanced resort skier, there are long wide open high elevation runs that will keep you zooming through that fresh alpine air all day and even if you are beginner skier there are some beautiful bunny slopes for you to practice your turns. And when you get tired there are plenty of on mountain spots to grab a bite or to treat yourself to an après ski beverage!
