Throughout quarantine I was searching for something to dig into. And finally towards the end of April, I found something I wanted to learn more about—writing for Medium. Unlike other platforms, Medium is wholly funded by membership fees rather than ads. So the platform and feed is very clean, uninterrupted by brands and as such writers focus on lofty topics. I knew this was something I wanted to be a part of, so I read up on what it was like to write for Medium and got started. Read on to see what my Medium experience has been like so far!
What is Medium?
Medium was founded by some of the founders of Twitter and is somewhere in between blogging and traditional ‘freelance writing’. There are publications that writers can submit their articles to and Medium pays writers based on views.
When you head to Medium.com, you’ll see their slogan ‘Get smarter about what matters to you’ and that’s really what it is all about. Writers are passionate about their niche and it is easy to go down a rabbit hole once you start to find articles that pique your interest. For me, I have explored the writing, marketing and blogging niche and have started contributing to a few publications, including: The Writing Cooperative, P.S. I Love You, The Ascent and the Post-Grad Survival Guide.

Once I started reading articles on Medium, I got really excited about it. So much so that I have published 15 articles in the month of June alone! I’ve written about my blogging journey, marketing experience, and content creation tips. If you are on Medium be sure to follow me @jqlouise.

It’s been a lot of fun sharing my experience on the business side of blogging as I know there is such a learning curve for people who are just launching their channels, it has been so rewarding creating some content that could potentially help someone else achieve their dream of turning a passion into a business.
Why you should write for Medium
Anyone can start writing on Medium, but all the publications have their own submission rules and content standards so be sure to check them out and follow them to the letter once you start submitting to publications—they are very particular about their individual guidelines. Following their formatting and content rules will increase your chances of getting selected for their publication, in addition to simply writing an interesting article!
