Perched over the Boston Public Garden, The Newbury Boston stands as a beacon of timeless elegance, offering a luxurious retreat steeped in sophistication. The property was once one of the first Ritz Carlton hotels in the United States, The Newbury now is synonymous with luxury and impeccable service. So when I received an invitation to The Newbury Boston’s exclusive Kentucky Derby Viewing Party, I knew it was an event not to be missed.
Put on your best hat, they said, and step into a world of timeless elegance and excitement. And indeed, from the moment I arrived, I was transported to a bygone world of glamour.

Emceed by the charismatic Jonathan Soroff, the event was a celebration of all things Derby, with live music setting the scene for an afternoon of excitement and anticipation. As I mingled with fellow guests, I couldn’t help but admire the attention to detail that went into every aspect of the party.
The hors d’oeuvres, inspired by Derby classics, were a feast for the senses, expertly crafted and beautifully presented. From the savory delights of mini hot browns to the sweet indulgence of bourbon pecan tarts, each bite was a culinary delight.
But it was the cocktails that truly stole the show. Expertly crafted and infused with the spirit of the Derby, they were a testament to the skill and creativity of The Newbury’s bartenders. From classic Mint Juleps to innovative twists like the Derby Day Punch, there was something for everyone.
Of course, no Derby party would be complete without a bourbon tasting, and The Newbury did not disappoint. Featuring the finest offerings from Woodford Reserve, it was a chance to savor the rich flavors of Kentucky’s finest spirits and learn about the art of bourbon making from experts.
As I cheered on my favorites and soaked in the excitement of the race, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of pride knowing that my presence was contributing to a worthy cause. With $5 from every ticket sale donated to the Highgate Charitable Foundation, which benefits children’s health and welfare, it was an opportunity to make a difference while enjoying a day of indulgence.
As the sun set on a day filled with laughter, camaraderie, and excitement, I couldn’t help but reflect on the beauty of The Newbury. This is truly not only one of my favorite hotels in Boston, buy also one of my favorite places in the entire city. So if you are looking for a place to savor both old and new Boston, while remaining a stone’s throw from pretty much anywhere in the city, the Newbury is the place for you.
