As a long-time spa lover, I am all about feeling and looking great while paying someone else to do the work, what can I say I’m not a DIY girlie?
Because I am constantly on the go, I am always looking for treatment studios, spas, salons etc in the cities I travel too. I love finding businesses with locations in multiple cities so I can hit up my favorites whenever one is nearby. I love finding hotels and resorts that I can plan a whole wellness weekend around. I’ve had over 100 massages in the last few years, I’ve tried eyelash extensions, laser facials, chemical peels, paid to sit in infrared saunas, gotten Botox, and tried sculpting body treatments like EmScult.
Sharing all my knowledge and honest reviews, Weekly Wellness will help you sort through all the trends and the must try treatments, according to the beauty industry, and we’ll tell you what’s worth splurging on when you want to treat yourself, what’s worth making time for regularly, and what you can skip and save some $$ on.
This week we’re talking about The Tox! They offer lymphatic drainage massage and sculpting facials. They have locations across the US and offer a variety of packages.
The experience:
You can easily book a Tox treatment through the MINDBODY app. I did the combo of the 60 minutes Master Tox with the Facial Sculpting treatment at the Scottsdale location. Tox also has locations in Boston, DC, Austin, Dallas, LA, NYC and many other cities.
All locations offer a relaxing, clean environment with a moody edge. The sleek black, industrial environment is unlike any spa I’ve ever been to. Once your checked in and brought to the treatment room you will undress and get on a massage table under the drape. The tables are heated as needed for your comfort and they provide a headband to keep your hair out of your face.
This is a lymphatic drainage massage; it is not gentle and relaxing like a Swedish massage. The pressure is heavy more like a deep tissue massage but the movements are very intentional to flush out the lymphatic system. The facial begins with a hand massage, the therapist will follow with small gentle cupping on your face, followed by a chilled gua sha and then they will go in with their lymphatic wand before returning to a hand massage. They will finish by placing a sheet mask on then moved on to the Master Tox body treatment starting with legs. Again, they begin with a firm hand massage moving up and down to stimulate the lymphatic system then they go in with the lymphatic drainage machine that mimics cupping. Unlike most traditional massages, the Master Tox includes a stomach massage. They will give you a small cloth to cover your chest and will remove the drape from the rest of your stomach. Do not be surprised if your stomach makes some grumbling sounds! After they finish all four limbs and your stomach you will flip over onto your stomach so they can finish off the back of your legs, arms and back.
Things I loved:
- The Tox Caffeine Drainage Lotion used during the treatment; my skin felt so soft after.
- How snatched my stomach looked after.
- The aesthetic of the studio
- The chilled gua sha and the sheet mask
Things that could be improved:
- The treatment “rooms” are all split up by thick black curtains. While it felt private enough you could occasionally hear therapists and clients in the next space which was a bit distracting.
- The music, again because the treatment areas are only split up by curtains the same music plays throughout the whole studio. While I don’t think the serene spa music played by most spas would fit the vibe at Tox, they could do something a little more relaxing. The music was a bit loud and a bit too similar to club house music. I can’t imagine if I had gone in with a headache looking to relax, the music would have been painful.
- No face hole on the massage table. When you flip over onto your stomach there is no face hole so you either need to turn your face to one side or balance on your chin.
The cost and value:
- The Master Tox and Sculpting facial was $349. The treatment lasted 1.5 and includes massage by hand, gua sha, gentle cupping, lymphatic drainage machine, and a sheet mask. For a facial and a body massage this feels like a fair price.
- They offer packages that give a discount if you buy 3 or more treatments at a time.
The bottom line:
The Tox has tons of convenient locations throughout the country, it’s easy to book online, and I really enjoyed my treatment. I think this is a nice treat on occasion, maybe before a beach vacation or if you have a special event coming up. If you have numerous upcoming events, or if you really struggle with regular bloating and water retention then a package could be worth it. I will definitely be visiting The Tox again!
