Visiting the Pyramids of Giza is a bucket-list experience that doesn’t necessarily require a guide. While guides can provide historical context and help navigate logistics, exploring on your own offers the freedom to move at your own pace and create a personalized experience. Here’s everything you need to know to visit the pyramids in Cairo independently and make the most of this iconic destination.

Why Visit Without a Guide?
Exploring the Pyramids of Giza independently offers unparalleled flexibility and a chance to connect with this incredible site in your own way. With proper planning and a sense of adventure, you’ll leave with unforgettable memories—and maybe even a better story to tell.
Whether you’re marveling at the towering structures or gazing into the eyes of the Sphinx, visiting the pyramids without a guide is an experience you’ll cherish forever and visiting is not as difficult as you might think!
Step 1: Getting to the Pyramids
The Pyramids of Giza are located about 13 kilometers southwest of downtown Cairo. Here are your options for getting there:
- Ride-Share App: Use Uber for an affordable and convenient ride directly to the site. Expect to pay around $2 from central Cairo, the ride is about 30-40 minutes long.
Step 2: Choosing Your Entry Tickets

You are now able to buy your entry tickets online and I highly recommend doing so. This is the official Pyramids ticket website.
- General Admission (700 EGP): Grants access to the pyramids complex, including the Great Pyramid, the Sphinx, and other smaller structures.
- Great Pyramid Entry (1500 EGP): For an additional fee, you can enter the Great Pyramid itself.
- Panoramic Viewpoint Access: Included with general admission, this area offers the best view of all three pyramids together.
Step 3: Exploring the Pyramids on Your Own
Once inside, here’s how to make the most of your self-guided visit. This is how to visit the pyramids:
- Start with the Great Pyramid of Khufu: The largest and most famous pyramid, it’s an awe-inspiring sight up close. If you’ve purchased an entry ticket, venture inside to see the Grand Gallery and burial chamber.
- Move to the Pyramid of Khafre: Known for its preserved limestone casing at the top, it’s slightly smaller but equally impressive.
- Visit the Pyramid of Menkaure: The smallest of the three main pyramids, it’s a great spot for quieter exploration and photos.
- Walk to the Sphinx: This iconic monument is a short distance from the pyramids and offers a stunning photo opportunity.
- Head to the Panoramic Viewpoint: Hire a camel or walk to this elevated spot to take in all three pyramids in one breathtaking view.
