Venice Carnival 2024

5 Mistakes to Avoid When Visiting Venice

We visited Venice this February for a quick one-night stop on our way back to Cannes after skiing in Cortina—and honestly, it was the perfect way to wrap up our trip. Even in winter, the city felt magical. You can see a bit of the vibe in this reel.

If you’re thinking of visiting (even for a night), here are a few things we learned—and the mistakes to avoid:

1. Don’t Skip Venice in Winter

Venice in February? So underrated. Fewer crowds, cooler temps, and still just as stunning. We loved seeing the canals and alleyways without all the tourist chaos that comes with peak summer. Bring a warm coat and you’re set.

2. Don’t Drive Into the City

We drove in from Cortina and left our car in a parking garage just outside Venice (you can’t drive inside the city itself). It was super easy. From there, you hop on a vaporetto (water bus) or walk—Venice is totally car-free, which is part of the charm.

3. Don’t Pack Too Much

Lugging a big suitcase over bridges and cobblestone streets is a struggle. If you’re staying just one night like we did, pack light. A backpack or small carry-on is all you need.

4. Don’t Just Stick to the Main Tourist Spots

Yes, St. Mark’s Basilica and the Rialto Bridge are must-sees, but wandering the quiet backstreets is where Venice really shines. We found beautiful little canals, cozy cafes, and almost no people. Just get lost—it’s worth it.

5. Don’t Miss Sunset

Venice at sunset hits different. The light, the reflections, the vibe—it’s unreal. Find a quiet canal or grab a drink along the water and just take it in. No reservations needed.

Where we stayed

One night in Venice was short, but more than enough to feel the magic. If you’re passing through northern Italy, it’s an easy stop—and even in the off-season, it’s one of those places that lives up to the hype. And we loved our hotel, check it out here!
