5 Mistakes to Avoid When Visiting the Pyramids of Giza

Visiting the Pyramids had been on our list forever, and we finally made it happen last year—and it ended up being our favorite trip of the year. We stayed at the Four Seasons in Cairo, took an Uber straight to the pyramids (no guide, no tour), and it was even more incredible than we expected. You can get a feel for it in this reel.

Here are a few things we learned along the way—and what to avoid if you’re planning your own visit:

1. Don’t Overthink It—You Don’t Need a Guide

We skipped the group tours and just took an Uber from our hotel. It was super cheap and easy, and we loved being on our own timeline. Once you get there, there are guides offering quick tours if you want more context, but honestly, wandering at your own pace is part of the magic.

2. Don’t Assume You Need to Stay in Giza

Cairo might be a 30–40 minute drive from the pyramids, but staying in the city (especially at the Four Seasons) made our experience so much more comfortable. We got to enjoy amazing food, a relaxing spa, and city views—then dip into the history when we wanted.

3. Don’t Arrive Late

Get there early. The light is better, the crowds are smaller, and the energy is different. We got there in the morning and had space to explore, take photos, and just take it all in without feeling rushed or overwhelmed.

4. Don’t Skip the Camel Photo Op

Yes, it’s touristy—but it’s fun. You can negotiate prices on the spot, and it makes for an iconic photo. Just be clear on the cost before hopping on and have cash ready.

5. Don’t Forget How Affordable It Is

Egypt is incredibly budget-friendly. The Uber ride, entry tickets, and even snacks and drinks while exploring didn’t add up to much at all. The food was a highlight—simple, flavorful, and delicious. We ate like royalty for the price of a casual lunch in Europe.

Seeing the Pyramids in real life was surreal. The size, the history, the energy—it’s one of those experiences that stays with you. We kept it simple, affordable, and flexible, and it ended up being one of the most memorable travel days we’ve ever had.
