Dreaming of Euro summer? You can now fly direct from Boston to Porto. TAP Air Portugal launched a new route this week offering nonstop service between Boston Logan International Airport and Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport in Porto, Portugal. This is TAP Air Portugal’s second direct route connecting Boston with Portugal. They’ve offered flights between Boston and Lisbon since 2018, Porto is an exciting addition for Bostonians.
Perched along the Douro River in northern Portugal, Porto is a city of old-world charm and vibrant energy. Known for its colorful riverside facades, steep cobbled streets, and the world-famous port wine that bears its name. As Portugal’s second-largest city, Porto blends a deep-rooted history with contemporary flair.
Porto’s history stretches all the way back to the Roman Empire, its name giving rise to the name “Portugal.” Travelers can wander the UNESCO-listed Ribeira district, hop on a river cruise past the terraced vineyards of the Douro Valley, or explore the historic port wine cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia, where tastings often come with panoramic views of the city skyline.
The city is compact and walkable, making it ideal for slow exploration. Marvel at the iconic blue-and-white azulejo tiles that tell stories across churches and train stations, admire the baroque beauty of Clérigos Tower, or walk across the Dom Luís I Bridge, designed by a student of Gustave Eiffel. Food lovers should not miss the francesinha, a decadent local sandwich layered with meat, cheese, and a rich beer-based sauce. With its mix of medieval allure, creative energy, and soulful cuisine, Porto truly captures the essence of Portugal.
The 6.5-hour direct flight from Boston to Porto will run seasonally through October. With flights available four times a week—on Mondays, Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays—this is the perfect time to plan a summer getaway to Portugal’s northern coast.
