Traveling With Jewelry: What to Bring and How to Pack It

Jewelry transforms a small travel wardrobe, and it takes almost no space. But it is also the easiest thing to lose, tangle or damage on a trip. A little planning keeps the pieces you love safe and the outfits interesting.

What to Bring

Bring pieces you would be comfortable wearing every day of the trip, plus one or two for evening. A watch, everyday earrings and a ring or two you never remove are a good base. For dinner, one statement piece, a bold earring or a necklace, changes a whole outfit.

What to Leave at Home

  • Anything irreplaceable or of deep sentimental value.
  • Pieces you would worry about wearing on a busy street or a crowded train.
  • Fragile or very fine chains that tangle and break easily.

How to Pack It

A small roll or zip case with separate compartments is ideal. Thread fine chains through a drinking straw or button them inside a soft pouch to stop tangling. Put earrings in a pill organizer or on a small card. Keep everything in your carry-on, never in checked luggage.

On the Road

Use the hotel safe for anything you are not wearing. Take rings off before applying sunscreen or swimming in the sea or a chlorinated pool, which can loosen settings and dull metals.

Before You Go

Take a quick photo of the pieces you are traveling with. If something is lost, it helps with insurance claims and hotel reports. For valuable jewelry, check that your insurance covers it while traveling.
