Welcome to ‘Travel Talks’, where the world’s foremost explorers, hospitality experts, and wanderlust aficionados share their stories, tips, and insider perspectives, guiding you through the destinations they know best. Did you miss our last one with Kelley Moreton, the GM at the Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale?

We recently spoke with Agnes Hayes, GM at one of our favorite Boston hotels, The Whitney Hotel. Agnes has 20 years of impressive hospitality experience and she has been a part of The Whitney team since the hotels founding in 2019. Agnes is a true expert of the boutique hotel’s roots and creating stellar guest experience.

Why do you love The Whitney Hotel and its Beacon Hill location?

What makes The Whitney truly special is our guests and the invaluable relationships we have cultivated with them over the years.  Being an intimate hotel allows us the opportunity to form genuine connections and even friendships.  They’re what sets us apart along with a blend of our property’s historic modern charm, picturesque Charles River views, and proximity to Boston’s cultural and recreational hotspots.  Located in the heart of Beacon Hill, one of Boston’s most prestigious and picturesque neighborhoods, our guests are treated to the iconic Federal-style and Victorian brick row houses lining steep streets illuminated by antique lanterns. Step outside our doors, and you’ll find yourself amidst a vibrant array of chic boutiques and antique shops, further elevating The Whitney’s timeless allure.

What is a hidden gem at The Whitney Hotel?

Nestled beside the lobby, the courtyard is our (and Beacon Hill’s) hidden gem. Surrounded by a lush seasonal landscape, guests can enjoy outdoor amenities like our cozy fire pit or tranquil fountain creating a beautiful retreat for relaxation and memory making. We offer menu items from Peregrine (our on-site restaurant) and highlight seasonal specialty cocktails and unique menu selections, further adding to the attraction of our not so secret garden.

What is your favorite restaurant or bar nearby?

I’m spoiled.  My favorite spot is right here at Peregrine, where everything is absolutely delicious. However, during the warmer months, I love heading to the Seaport to unwind while overlooking Boston at The Lookout Rooftop and Bar.  The flavors of Peregrine and the views at Lookout make for the perfect evening.

What is your favorite thing to do there in the peak season?

During the sun-filled days in peak season, I enjoy walks along the Charles River and throughout the Boston Public Garden.  I also love to spend every moment I can boating with my husband and our two daughters.

What is your favorite thing to do there in the off season?

During the off-season, I’m often drawn to the cozy atmosphere of The Whitney courtyard, transformed into an apres ski wonderland. Guests can savor hot cider and other delights inspired (very loosely) by my love of snow.  That said, as an avid skier, you’ll often find me hitting the nearby slopes with my family whenever the weather permits.
