Zermatt Matterhorn

Q&A with Selina Gull from Zermatt Tourism

Welcome to Voices, where we sit down with the world’s top hoteliers, explorers, and luxury lifestyle insiders to uncover what’s new, next, and not to be missed in hospitality and travel. Last time, Yves Giacometti, gave us insider tips for planning a trip to Cairo —did it have you dreaming of a stay at the Four Seasons Cairo at Nile Plaza?

This week, we’re heading to the Swiss Alps to explore the storied mountain village, Zermatt, home of the Matterhorn. We spoke with Selina Gull, head of marketing for Zermatt Tourism to discover everything that makes this mountain retreat so magical!

What do you love most about Zermatt and how would you describe the energy there?

What I love most about Zermatt is the unique magic you feel when you arrive in this idyllic village, nestled in the impressive mountain landscape. In Zermatt, connoisseurs meet outdoor enthusiasts, and that is what makes Zermatt special: the combination of activity in nature and the enjoyment and relaxation.

If someone only had one weekend there, what are the must-do experiences?

If you only have one weekend in Zermatt, you must:

    1. Visit the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise: Take the cable car up to the highest cable car station in Europe for stunning views and the chance to explore the glacier palace.
    2. Ride up to the Gornergrat: This scenic train ride offers spectacular views of the Matterhorn and the surrounding peaks.

What is your favorite time of year to visit Zermatt?

My favorite time to visit Zermatt is during the autumn. The fall foliage adds a magical touch to the landscape, and the weather is crisp and refreshing. There are also fewer crowds, so it’s the perfect time to explore the region.

What is your favorite thing to do during the summer?

My favorite summer activity in Zermatt is combining hiking with culinary experiences. After a scenic hike through the beautiful alpine trails, I love to relax and enjoy a delicious meal at one of Zermatt’s charming mountain restaurants. It’s the perfect way to savor the local cuisine while soaking in the stunning views of the Matterhorn and the surrounding peaks.

What is your favorite thing to do during the winter?

In the winter, my favorite activity is skiing. Zermatt offers some of the best skiing in the world, with extensive slopes and breathtaking mountain views.

What are some Zermatt hidden gems that even frequent visitors might not know about?

Some hidden gems include the hike from Schwarzsee to Stafelalp, which takes you past the impressive north face of the Matterhorn and offers breathtaking views. The hamlets of Blatt and Zmutt are also worth exploring: they offer a peaceful escape with charming old buildings and beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. Additionally, a stroll through the old part of the village in Zermatt, known as Hinterdorf, feels like a trip back in time, with its old houses and barns dating from the 16th to 18th centuries.

Any seasonal events or festivals travelers should plan around?

Travelers should consider planning their visit around Zermatt Unplugged, a music festival held each April that features acoustic performances in intimate settings. It’s a unique event that brings together artists and music lovers in the alpine environment.

Anything new and exciting that travelers should check out?

A new and exciting attraction in Zermatt is the Matterhorn Alpine Crossing, a cable car connection between Zermatt and Italy, which offers a unique opportunity to experience the Alps and connect two countries in one trip.
