Four Seasons Bangkok voices

Four Seasons Bangkok is where timeless culture meets modern rhythm

Welcome to Voices, where we sit down with the world’s top hoteliers, explorers, and luxury insiders to uncover what’s new, next, and noteworthy in travel. Last time, we journeyed through Indonesia aboard Dunia Baru, a handcrafted phinisi yacht redefining barefoot luxury. In this edition, we head to Bangkok to meet Lubosh Barta, Regional Vice President and General Manager of Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok at Chao Phraya River — a hospitality leader at the helm of one of the city’s most iconic riverside retreats. From ancient canals to vibrant art spaces, he shares the hidden layers and unforgettable flavours of Thailand’s capital.

What makes your city special to you, and how would you describe its unique energy?

Bangkok is a city of contrasts and vibrant rhythms, where centuries-old temples stand alongside gleaming skyscrapers, and bustling street markets coexist with tranquil riverbanks. What makes it truly special to me is this dynamic blend of tradition and modernity. Every corner tells a story, and every moment pulses with possibility. The energy here is warm, welcoming, and always alive — there’s a constant sense of discovery.

If someone only had 24 hours there, what are the must-do experiences?

I would recommend starting with a colourful long-tail boat ride along the Chao Phraya River and through its canals to get a feel for the soul of the city. Follow that with a visit to Wat Arun or the Grand Palace. During the day, enjoy Thai food — whether Michelin-starred or humble street food — then hop on a tuk tuk for a city ride or unwind with a traditional Thai massage.

What are some hidden gems—restaurants, shops, or activities—that even frequent visitors might not know about?

Creative spaces like Warehouse 30 and ATT 19 perfectly capture Bangkok’s dynamic art and design scene. Warehouse 30, set in a converted industrial warehouse along Charoen Krung Road, is home to galleries, artisan vendors, cafes, film screenings, and community events. Just nearby, ATT 19 Gallery, a 120-year-old Chinese language school transformed into an art space, offers a multidisciplinary experience, combining contemporary art, curated retail, and cultural programming in a beautifully restored heritage compound within the city’s Historic Design District.

For an authentic taste of local life, I always recommend exploring the family-run eateries in Talad Noi, a riverside neighbourhood steeped in history. Nestled on the edge of Chinatown, Talad Noi has long been home to generations of Chinese-Thai families and is full of culinary gems. One of my personal favourites is Sui Heng Chicken Rice, just a short walk from the hotel. This humble shophouse has been serving its beloved khao man gai (Hainanese chicken rice) for nearly 70 years — a comforting, time-honoured dish that continues to draw Bangkokians from across the city.

And for those who love to shop with intention, the independent boutiques along Charoen Krung are full of surprises, from emerging Thai fashion designers to unique homeware and vintage finds. It’s a neighbourhood that rewards curiosity and a slower pace.

Your city has an incredible food scene. Beyond the hotel, where do you personally love to dine? And how about at the Four Seasons Bangkok too?

Chef Pam Pichaya Soontornyanakij, recently awarded The World’s Best Female Chef, is someone I deeply admire — not only for her creativity but for her inspiring journey. I also enjoy Thai coffee from neighbourhood cafés in Charoen Krung. For something more casual but unforgettable, Jay Fai’s crab omelette is a must.

At the hotel, our signature restaurant, Yu Ting Yuan, offers Cantonese cuisine made with exceptional local ingredients — a true showcase of culinary craftsmanship.

What’s one local tradition or cultural experience that every visitor should take part in?

Try a Muay Thai lesson at Four Seasons Urban Wellness Centre, visit a local Muay Thai gym, or catch an electrifying match at Ratchadamnoen Stadium. More than just a sport, Muay Thai is a cultural tradition deeply rooted in Thai history and heritage. From the ceremonial rituals to the sheer intensity of the fight, it’s an experience full of passion and pageantry — one you won’t soon forget.

What’s your favourite time of year in the city, and why? Any seasonal events or festivals travellers should plan around?

December to March is perfect to travel in Bangkok — the cooler weather makes it ideal for exploring. I love the magic of New Year’s Eve by the river, and Songkran in April is an unmissable cultural celebration. Loy Krathong in November, when ‘krathong’ and floral offerings float on the water, is also incredibly beautiful and uniquely Thai.

What’s the best way to explore—on foot, by bike, by boat, or another way?

Each mode of transport offers a unique perspective in Bangkok. A longtail boat ride through the canals reveals the city’s traditional, riverside charm, while a tuk tuk immerses you in the vibrant energy of its bustling streets. The BTS Skytrain is perfect for getting around quickly, and offers a fun, elevated view of the city along the way.

What’s the one must-do at Four Seasons Bangkok?

Eat, drink, spa – see and be seen. Whether you’re dining along the river, unwinding in our Urban Wellness Centre, or enjoying a drink at BKK Social Club, the experience is all about indulgence and connection.

How does your hotel reflect the character of the city and help guests feel immersed in the destination?

We are an urban riverside retreat that cuts through the heart of modern Bangkok. The hotel expresses the city as it is today: sophisticated, bold, and constantly evolving. Through art, cuisine, and warm service, we create a space that feels distinctly Thai yet thoroughly contemporary.

The hotel is designed by Jean-Michel Gathy in collaboration with Thai artist Khun Dong. It blends global sophistication with local heritage. From curated installations and flowing water features to ART Space — our rotating gallery in partnership with MOCA Bangkok — every detail immerses guests in the city’s vibrant creative spirit.
