Then head to Fig for dinner. Fig specializes in farm to table cuisine and the menu reflects that. Everything is seasonal and the menu changes daily. We started with the Jimmy Red Cornbread and then moved on to a King Mackerel rice bowl and the Mizuna Salad. For mains we had the Roasted Snowy Grouper, the Palmetto Sweet Onions and the Pumpkin Soup. For dessert we had the Galette des Rois cake. This is a Charleston staple so be sure to try it when you visit.

But after all that be sure to save a little room for a special second dessert. Head around the corner to the famous Planters Inn for their 12-layer coconut cake. This coconut cake is worth a try, but trust me, 1 slice is probably enough for three people! So, order one to share before the night is out.

History of the city

Charleston, South Carolina, is steeped in a rich and storied history that spans centuries. Founded in 1670, Charleston quickly emerged as a crucial port city, serving as a hub for trade and commerce in the colonial era. Its strategic location along the Atlantic coast contributed to its prosperity, attracting settlers from Europe, Africa, and the Caribbean, who infused the city with diverse cultures and traditions. Charleston played a pivotal role in the American Revolution, with notable events such as the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776 at the city’s Provincial Congress. The antebellum period saw Charleston flourish as a center of wealth and sophistication, characterized by its elegant architecture, thriving plantations, and bustling slave trade. However, the city also bore witness to the harsh realities of slavery and the Civil War, enduring significant hardships and destruction. In the aftermath of the war, Charleston underwent a period of reconstruction and resurgence, gradually reclaiming its status as a cultural and economic powerhouse in the South. Today, Charleston stands as a living testament to its rich heritage, with its historic landmarks, cobblestone streets, and vibrant cultural scene attracting visitors from around the world eager to delve into its captivating past.
