Autumn is a beautiful time to travel in New England. The leaves turn, the air is crisp, and the crowds are gone. Martha’s Vineyard is a different place in the Fall than it is in the Summer, which is why it is one of our favorite times to visit. We put together the perfect itinerary for an autumn trip to Edgartown, Martha’s Vineyard, so read on to get some ideas for your next New England weekend getaway.
Getting to Edgartown, Martha’s Vineyard
If you’ve been following along on our summer adventures over the past few months, you know that we are huge fans of Cape Air. Cape Air is a local carrier that offers daily flights from Boston to Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket, Provincetown and many more places. We love their convenient routes and quick flight times, and when that is combined with the fact that it will most likely be just you and the pilot onboard, it is the only way to fly in a socially distant fashion these days. Cape Air flies to Martha’s Vineyard year-round, so it is a great option for anyone living in downtown Boston who wants to optimize their weekend getaway for maximum time on the island.
Why Visit Edgartown
Edgartown is our all-time favorite town on Martha’s Vineyard. It feels the most removed from the hustle and bustle of daily life and is filled with gorgeous historic captain’s homes and its location on the East end of the island gives it sweeping water views and not to mention the quaint Chappaquiddick Island is just a three-minute ferry ride away.
The scenery, the shopping, the dining and the overall ambiance make Edgartown a very special place to be and we keep coming back year after year.
Where to Stay in Edgartown, Martha’s Vineyard
The grand dame of Edgartown has always been the Harbor View Hotel. And a few years ago, this grand old hotel got a much-deserved facelift by its new owners. Bernard Chiu and his team gave this historic property a chic top to bottom update, implemented some amazing new amenities and revamped the food and beverage program significantly.
The Harbor View Hotel is a must for the luxury traveler looking for that classic New England experience, when you arrive at the property, it feels as if you’ve stepped into an old friend’s family summer home, it’s familiar, glamourous and comfortable all at the same time. The rooms are luxuriously appointed with excellent linens, toiletries and technology. The views are impeccable no matter where you are situated, with either pool, ocean or town views. And the staff are incredibly well trained, attentive, and courteous.
Be sure to enjoy breakfast each morning at their main restaurant, Bettini. Everything is cooked to perfection and presented well. Indulge in some eggs, avocado toast or some pancakes for a luxe start to the morning.
Then afterwards, take out one of the complimentary Mercedes vehicles for a little exploring around the island. And when you come back be sure to save some time for a bike ride around Edgartown in the hotel’s photogenic bikes.
