During a summer trip through Tuscany last year, we made a quick stop in Pisa to finally see the Leaning Tower of Pisa in real life—and we’re so glad we did. It was a short detour, but 100% worth it. You can check out the vibe in this reel.
Yes, it’s one of the most iconic landmarks in Italy. But visiting Pisa isn’t as straightforward as you might think. Here are a few mistakes to avoid if you’re planning a visit:
1. Don’t Skip It Just Because It’s “Touristy”
It’s popular for a reason. The tower and the surrounding Piazza dei Miracoli are stunning in person, especially in the early morning or late afternoon when the crowds thin out. It’s an easy stop if you’re road-tripping through Tuscany—don’t write it off.
2. Don’t Just Look and Leave
Sure, snapping the classic photo is fun (and yes, everyone is doing the “holding it up” pose). But take the time to explore the area. The cathedral and baptistery are gorgeous inside, and the whole piazza has this surreal, almost cinematic energy.
3. Don’t Forget to Book Tower Tickets in Advance
If you want to climb the tower, book tickets ahead of time. It sells out fast, especially in summer. We didn’t go up this time since we were just stopping through, but next time, we’ll plan better.
4. Don’t Drive into the Historic Zone
Heads up: Pisa has ZTL (limited traffic zones), and driving too close to the tower can get you fined. Park a bit outside and walk in—it’s an easy and scenic stroll.
5. Don’t Miss the Street Food
There are a ton of touristy cafes near the tower, but walk a few blocks out and you’ll find amazing panini spots and gelaterias where the locals actually go. We grabbed sandwiches and sat on the grass—super chill and no crowds.

It might not be a full-day destination, but visiting the Leaning Tower of Pisa is totally worth the detour. Quick, easy, and unforgettable. If you’re already in Tuscany, add it to the list. Even just an hour or two can be the highlight of the day.
Another great city in Italy that is worth a detour is Verona, read our guide to what not to do there too!
