Lenox in the Berkshires, my top pick among fall weekend escapes from Boston

The Best Fall Weekend Escapes from Boston for 2026

There is nothing better in the fall than packing a bag on Friday, leaving the city by noon and being somewhere with a fireplace by dinner. The good news for anyone in Boston is that some of the best fall weekend escapes from Boston are less than three hours away, and you can trade the city for the mountains, the ocean or a small New England town without ever getting on a plane.

I have already shared my favorite fall foliage weekend getaways from Boston, and this is a new list for 2026. It is less about chasing leaves and more about where I would actually want to spend a weekend in October and November. If foliage is your priority, my New England foliage itinerary follows the color south over four days.

Here they are, ranked.

1. The Berkshires: Canyon Ranch Lenox

The Berkshires are my top pick for a fall weekend, and Lenox is the place to base yourself. This summer I escaped to the Berkshires for a stay at Canyon Ranch Lenox, and I think it is even more appealing as the weather cools.

Canyon Ranch is all-inclusive, with meals, fitness classes and outdoor activities built in, so you can arrive and stop planning. This year the resort is hosting a Berkshire Fall Foliage Discovery Week from October 19 to 25, with guided hikes, yoga, painting workshops and spa treatments.

One of my summer highlights in the Berkshires was a Tanglewood night with seats inside the Shed for Yo-Yo Ma. Tanglewood’s season is over for the year, but it is a good reason to come back next summer.

Distance from Boston: about two and a half hours.

2. The Litchfield Hills: Mayflower Inn & Spa

Northwest Connecticut in late October is pure New England: stone walls, white churches and hills turning red and gold. The Mayflower Inn & Spa in Washington is the hotel I would book. I called it New England’s ultimate summer escape, but the spa, the library and the fireplaces make it just as good in the fall.

Distance from Boston: about two and a half hours.

3. Newport: The Chanler at Cliff Walk

Newport is quieter after Labor Day and that is when I like it most. Walk the Cliff Walk in the morning, tour one of the Gilded Age mansions in the afternoon and finish with dinner by the water.

The Chanler at Cliff Walk is my pick. The historic mansion at the start of the Cliff Walk has just 20 rooms, a newly redesigned lobby and Remy’s Loose, its French-inspired restaurant.

Distance from Boston: about an hour and a half.

4. Kennebunkport: White Barn Inn & Spa

The southern Maine coast is lovely in the fall, when the summer crowds have left Dock Square and you can walk Ocean Avenue in a sweater. The White Barn Inn & Spa, Auberge Collection, is the classic choice, known for its restaurant and its cozy, country-house feel.

Distance from Boston: about an hour and a half.

5. Cape Ann: Beauport Hotel Gloucester

For a weekend that feels far away but is barely an hour from the city, Cape Ann is hard to beat. Beauport Hotel Gloucester sits right on the harbor, with a rooftop that is perfect for a sunset drink while the weather holds. Spend a day in Rockport, eat lobster and drive the coast road back.

Distance from Boston: about an hour.

6. Cape Cod: The Chatham Inn

The Cape in the fall is a different place: the beaches are quiet, the light is beautiful and dinner reservations are much easier to get. I wrote about a cozy fall getaway at the Chatham Inn, and it is still the inn I would recommend for a quiet weekend in Chatham. Walk Main Street, watch the seals at Lighthouse Beach and save room for a long dinner.

Distance from Boston: about two hours, often less in the off-season.

7. The Pioneer Valley: The Inn on Boltwood

Amherst is an easy, underrated weekend. The Inn on Boltwood is right on the town common, the Emily Dickinson Museum is a short walk away and the college towns around it have great bookstores and cafés. I have written about it as a winter reset after the holidays, but late fall is a lovely time to go too.

Distance from Boston: about an hour and 45 minutes.

How to Plan Fall Weekend Escapes from Boston

  • Leave Friday by noon. Traffic out of Boston on Friday afternoon can add an hour to any of these drives.
  • Book dinner when you book the room. The best restaurants in small towns fill up fast on fall weekends.
  • Think about November. Many of these hotels are just as beautiful after the leaves fall, and rooms are easier to find.
  • Pick one base. For a two-night trip, I would rather settle in at one great hotel than try to see three towns.

For me, the best fall weekend escapes from Boston are the ones where you come home on Sunday feeling like you were gone much longer than two days.
