As the nights draw in, velvet comes out of the closet. Nothing catches candlelight the same way, and nothing says evening quite as clearly. The trick is to wear it with confidence and restraint: one velvet piece, and everything else simple.
Start With One Piece
- A velvet blazer over a white shirt or a black knit.
- Velvet trousers with a fine sweater or a silk blouse.
- A velvet slip dress or midi skirt.
- Velvet loafers or slippers for a subtle touch.
The Colors
Black and midnight navy are the most versatile. Deep jewel tones, emerald, sapphire, burgundy and aubergine, are the most festive. Avoid very bright or shiny velvets unless the event is truly dressy.
What to Pair It With
Velvet looks best against matte textures that let it stand out: fine wool, crisp cotton, smooth leather. Two velvets together can work in the same color, as a suit, but rarely in contrasting shades.
Caring for Velvet
Hang velvet with space around it so the pile is not crushed. Steam it rather than ironing it, from the inside, and brush it gently in the direction of the pile. Follow the care label; many velvets need professional cleaning.
Where to Wear It
Theater, holiday dinners, hotel bars, the party season and any night that calls for a little more than usual. From now until New Year, it rarely looks out of place after dark.
