The Thai islands are world famous for a reason. They are picturesque, filled with amazing people, and a wonderfully spicy cuisine. If you are looking for a relaxing, sun soaked Southeast Asian getaway spot, Koh Samui is the place to go. Read on to find out why!
Why Go to Koh Samui
There are many Thai islands to visit, but Koh Samui is a great choice either for a first timer or the frequent visitor to Thailand. Easy enough to get to, but still retaining that “island vibe”, ie. Open air airport, it has the right blend of both sides of the spectrum. You will probably have to fly through Bangkok or another major hub to get to Koh Samui, but there are plenty of daily flights, so it is a convenient add on to any other Southeast Asian trip.
Where to Stay in Koh Samui
If you are looking to unplug, you need to head to the newly opened Ritz Carlton Koh Samui. Located on the Northeast side of the island, you will experience both beautiful sunrises and sunsets. The sunrises you can take in right from your villa and the sunsets you’ll want to head to the check in pavilion to enjoy the view over their amazing infinity edge pond.
Definitely splurge on a pool villa, preferably an Oceanview one. Trust me you won’t want to leave—imagine waking up to a golden sunrise, swimming in privacy and taking in the view of the South Pacific all day long!
The ocean front one-bedroom villas are huge, our Ultimate Pool Villa was over 1000 square feet, included a private pool, outdoor dining area, outdoor shower and a spacious interior sleeping, living and bathing area as well.
What to Do at the Ritz Carlton Koh Samui
If you stay at the Ritz, you’ll find that you really don’t need to leave the resort at all if you don’t want to. With several dining options, a beautiful beach, and plenty of activities to keep you busy, you could spend a week here and not run out of things to do. You’ll definitely want to spend a day just soaking up the sun at your own private pool, a day at the beach, a day kayaking or doing SUP, a morning learning Muay Thai Kickboxing, and plenty of time dining at all the amazing on property restaurants.
What to Eat at the Ritz Carlton
On property at the Ritz Carlton Koh Samui there are 7 different dining options. We tried as many as we could!
Pak Tai – The first night you arrive on Koh Samui you have to try Pak Tai, the traditional Thai option, which also comes with complimentary entertainment while you dine! Each group dines in their own private alcove, it is just so intimate and wonderful. If you like spicy food you will love the menu at Pak Tai, it is filled with Southern Thai curries!
Sea Salt & Tides – Then the next day you have to visit Sea Salt, while you relax by the pool or the beach. This seaside menu is filled with fresh appetizers and entrees that will satisfy your island cravings. Oh and try a cocktail as well! If you really want to relax order lunch right from a beach cabana!
The Peak – The Peak is literally the pinnacle of dining at the Ritz. Open for both afternoon tea and dinner, you will love the view and the menu! For afternoon tea enjoy exquisite small bites and a variety of local hot teas.
And then you have to come back for dinner for a very special date night. The prix fixe menu is just amazing. Each course delights more than the last and the friendly staff makes for a great evening. Oh and be sure to treat yourself to the wine pairings you won’t be disappointed!
Breakfast – Last but not least, the breakfast at the Ritz Koh Samui has to be the most expansive we have ever seen at a resort. With so many dining options, we didn’t get to try everything in the 4 days that we spent there. With rotating Asian, western and fusion options ranging from a full patisserie, dim sum station, customize your own noodle bar and more, there is something for everyone and everything is executed extremely well. There is also a full-service juice bar offering any combination of freshly pressed juices and smoothies made from all the local produce. Whether you are looking to indulge or detox, you will start your day off right at the Ritz Carlton Koh Samui.
