Sailing is typically thought of as a blue-blood, activity for the privileged. However, this sailing club in the Boston area serves everyone, with a special focus on inner city youth. “Courageous Sailing” located near the Charlestown Navy Yard “seeks to transform lives through sailing programs that inspire learning, personal growth and leadership.”
Two weeks ago supporters came together for the 23rd “Make-A-Mark” gala. There was music, dancing, food, live and silent auctions, and of course an amazing view of the Boston city skyline. The Make-A-Mark event is the keystone fundraising gala of the summer for Courageous Sailing and not only did we all get to enjoy a beautiful summer evening but we also got to hear from many of the sailors about why they love the program. These kids and teenagers live in the Boston area and without the program they would not have the chance to get out on the water in the summertime. But because of the amazing programming offered to them they get to enjoy the nice weather, learn how to sail and have the type of summer vacation all kids deserve!
The Courageous Sailing youth programs help kids come out of their shell, make new friends and learn a fun skill, how to sail and what better place to do so than in this amazing view of Boston?
Courageous Sailing was established in 1987 and is a year-round community sailing center. The lessons are offered to inner city kids either free or at a low cost. And in 2011, Courageous was named one of the top 10 community sailing programs nationwide by both US Sailing and Sail Magazine. It so great to see wonderful programs like this available to all children who live in the Boston area. We will definitely be attending Make-A-Mark again next year!
