October is one of my favorite months to be in Europe. The light is softer, the cities feel like themselves again and you can walk for hours without melting. The only tricky part is packing, because a single week can bring a warm afternoon in Rome, a gray morning in Paris and a cold, damp evening in London. This is my Europe packing list for exactly that kind of week.
My approach is simple. Pack a small capsule in a tight color story, build in layers and let one or two pieces do the dressing up.
1. Start With the Weather, Not the Outfits
Before you think about clothes, check the averages. In October, Paris usually sits in the low 60s by day and the high 40s at night. London is about the same, with more chance of rain. Rome is warmer, often around 70 in the afternoon, dropping into the 50s after dark.
That range tells you everything. You want pieces that work at 50 and at 70, which means layers, not heavy single pieces. And you want one thing that handles rain.
2. Choose a Color Story and Stick to It
The easiest way to pack light is to pick two or three base colors that all work together. For fall, I love camel, navy, cream, gray and chocolate brown, with one accent if you want it. When everything goes with everything, seven days of outfits come out of a surprisingly small bag.
3. The Core Pieces
For a week, this is roughly what I would pack:
- Two pairs of trousers. One tailored pair in wool or a wool blend, and one easier pair. In my Cannes post I recommended linen trousers for the fall Riviera, and that still holds in the south.
- One pair of good jeans. Straight or slightly relaxed, in a dark wash.
- Three or four knits. At least one in cashmere. A fine-gauge sweater layers under a coat, and a slightly chunkier one works on its own on cooler days.
- Three tops or shirts. A crisp white shirt, a striped tee and something silky for dinner.
- One dress. Something you can wear with boots by day and with heels or loafers at night.
- One coat or trench. This is the piece I would spend on. A trench is perfect for Paris and London; a light wool coat is better if you are heading north later in the month.
4. The Sweater Trick That Changes Everything
One of my favorite styling tricks is also one of the most practical: tie a sweater over your shoulders. I shared my take on it in a reel I called the old money sweater hack.
It is the easiest way to carry an extra layer without carrying a bag. When the afternoon warms up, the sweater comes off your back and onto your shoulders. When the sun goes down, it goes back on. It also instantly makes jeans and a white shirt look more put together, which is why I think it belongs in every Europe packing list for the fall.

5. Shoes: Fewer, Better
Shoes take up the most space, so I keep it to three pairs:
- Loafers. My fall Riviera essential, and just as good on cobblestones in Rome.
- Ankle boots with a low, walkable heel, ideally ones that can handle a wet sidewalk.
- Clean sneakers for long walking days and the flight.
If you have a dinner that calls for heels, choose one pair that works with your dress and your tailored trousers.
6. One Good Bag
I said this in my Belle Plage story and I will say it again: bring one good bag. A structured crossbody or a medium shoulder bag in a neutral color will go with every outfit and keep your things secure in busy places. Add a small foldable tote for markets and day trips.
7. Rent the Statement Piece
If you want a show-stopping outfit for one special night, you do not need to buy it or pack it from home. I wore a dress by Sabina Musayev that I rented through Rent the Runway on a Blue Monday in Paris.
Renting is my favorite trick for a trip with one dressy evening. You get the outfit and the photo, and you are not hauling a dress you will only wear once.
8. Accessories That Do the Heavy Lifting
Small things take an outfit from travel to dinner:
- A cashmere scarf or wrap. It doubles as a blanket on the plane.
- Simple gold jewelry. A pair of earrings and one or two pieces you never take off.
- Sunglasses. October sun in Italy and the south of France can still be bright.
- A compact umbrella. Not glamorous, but you will be glad you have it.

9. Pack Smart, Not Just Light
A few habits make a week away much easier:
- Roll knits and fold tailoring. Use packing cubes to keep categories together.
- Wear your bulkiest pieces on the plane. Your coat, boots and chunky sweater travel on you.
- Leave room. Europe is where I like to shop, and my guide on getting your fashion fix while traveling abroad is all about that.
Your luggage matters too. A carry-on with good wheels makes trains and cobblestones far less painful, and my roundup of chic luggage brands has options at every size.
