New England does Christmas better than almost anywhere. Lobster trap trees, Santa arriving by boat, horse-drawn parades and Gilded Age mansions dressed for the season: it is the version of the holidays most of us grew up seeing in movies, and it is all within a few hours of Boston.
The catch is that the best inns in these towns book up early for the big weekends. Here are the Christmas events I would plan around this year, with the 2026 dates that have been announced so far.
1. Kennebunkport, Maine: Christmas Prelude
December 3 to 13, 2026. Kennebunkport’s Christmas Prelude is the quintessential coastal New England Christmas. The Dock Square tree lighting is Friday, December 4 at 6pm, followed at 7pm by the lighting of the famous Lobster Trap Tree in Cape Porpoise. On Sunday, December 6 at 1pm, Santa arrives by lobster boat at The Nonantum Resort. Book a room within walking distance of Dock Square so you can skip the parking.
2. Nantucket: The Christmas Stroll
December 4 to 6, 2026. The Stroll is the weekend Nantucket comes back to life, with shops decorated for the season, carolers and Santa arriving by “nautical sleigh” at noon on Saturday, December 5. The wider Nantucket Noel season runs from November 1 through December 31, with more than 150 decorated trees downtown. Ferries and flights fill fast for Stroll weekend, so book travel along with your room. For a splurge, the White Elephant puts you in town near the harbor, and The Wauwinet is the quiet option out at the far end of the island. For more on where to stay, see my guides to The Nantucket Inn and Nantucket after the crowds.
3. Woodstock, Vermont: Wassail Weekend
December 11 to 13, 2026. Woodstock is the prettiest village in Vermont at any time of year, and Wassail Weekend is its finest moment. The horse-drawn Wassail Parade circles the Green on Saturday, December 12 at 2pm, followed by a Yule log bonfire and carol sing. Billings Farm holds its own Wassail Weekend the same dates, with orchard wassailing and a decorated Victorian farmhouse. The Woodstock Inn, right on the Green, is the place to stay.
4. Newport, Rhode Island: Holidays at the Newport Mansions
November 21, 2026 to January 3, 2027. The Preservation Society of Newport County decorates its Gilded Age mansions for the season, with themed trees and garlands throughout (last year The Breakers’ Great Hall had a towering poinsettia tree). On select evenings from November 21 to December 27, Sparkling Lights at The Breakers adds outdoor light displays with timed entry, so reserve ahead. Pair it with a night at Castle Hill Inn for the full Newport experience.
5. Mystic, Connecticut: Lighted Boats and Lantern Lights
Boat parade: November 28, 2026. Lantern Lights: select dates December 3 to 23. The Mystic Holiday Lighted Boat Parade sails down the Mystic River by the drawbridge just after 6pm on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, and it is free to watch. At Mystic Seaport Museum, Lantern Lights runs December 3 to 6, 10 to 13 and 17 to 23, from 2 to 8:30pm. It is an easy day trip from Boston or a stop on the way to New York.
6. Stockbridge, Massachusetts: Main Street at Christmas
Usually the first full weekend of December; 2026 dates to be announced. Stockbridge recreates Norman Rockwell’s famous painting of its Main Street at Christmas, complete with carolers on the porch of the Red Lion Inn. It is the most nostalgic event on this list, and a perfect excuse for a Berkshires weekend. Check the Stockbridge Chamber of Commerce for this year’s schedule, and see my case for visiting Western Mass for the holidays.
7. Shelburne, Vermont: Winter Lights at Shelburne Museum
November 27, 2026 to January 3, 2027. Shelburne Museum turns its grounds into a walk-through light show Thursday to Sunday, with a handful of drive-around nights in December and early January. It is closed on December 24 and 25. Read about my visit to Winter Lights, then make a weekend of it around Burlington and Lake Champlain.
8. Boston: Tree Lightings and Snowport
Boston has plenty of reasons to stay home for the season. The Copley Square tree lighting is Monday, November 30, 5 to 6pm, doubling as the park’s grand reopening, followed by cookies with Santa at the Fairmont Copley Plaza. The Boston Common tree lighting is Thursday, December 3, 6 to 8pm. The tree is a gift from Nova Scotia every year, a thank-you for Boston’s help after the 1917 Halifax Explosion. And Snowport, the holiday market in the Seaport, runs November 6 to December 27 with more than 130 vendors and free entry. For a festive night in town, a Beacon Hill staycation at The Whitney is hard to beat (book The Whitney here), and my favorite holiday lights in New England make a great evening drive.
